We have given this property a rating of 3 on our Sustainability Rating. This is based on the following answers to our questions. Please note that the answers are given by the owners and are not validated by us.

Original tiles. The roof has been renewed with insulation in 2006. The insulation is placed on the outside underneath the original tiles which made it possible to keep the original wooden structure in sight on the inside. (The roof is almost 100% ideal for solar panels.)

The house is heated by cv running on gas and in some areas underfloor heating (kitchen, downstairs bathroom, large living room).

Water is heated by gas.

Cooking is on gas.

The house is connected to the mains but is crying out for solar panels. This part of The Netherlands has the most sunshine of the country and the roof is ideally placed.

Water is connected to the mains. In the past, there was a water catchment in the cellar. This can easily be reinstated to use for flushing the wc.

Food production?
The organically tended garden offers lots of edibles and a separate vegetable plot including a green house. There's a little pond for wild life and a chicken coop.

Now 50% but self sufficiency in fruits and vegetables should be attainable.

Income possibilities?
The house has so many possibilities as the island is geared towards tourism. There are walking trails passing by the house so a tea garden, B&B, art gallery...anything is possible. There's an old car shed in the back of the garden which could be transformed into a separate letting accommodation. There's also a timber cladded trailer which could be used as an office or additional sleeping accommodation.
Ths island is famous for bird-watching, wind surfing, kite surfing etc. The historical town has its own recreational harbour so many boating people as well.

Owners opinion on sustainable features:
The right person(s) could live a wonderful sustainable life in this house. The garden is full of plants for bees and butterflies. You can grow your own fruits and vegetables. Enjoy the beautiful setting and Nature all around on the island. The house and car shed are ideal for solar panels. Enough rainwater to catch.

The house was built in 1917 and the town as a whole has protected townscape. This means you cannot alter the outside of the house without permission from the local government.
